Advances in Flight Control Systems Agneta Balint

Nonlinear problems in flight control have stimulated cooperation among engineers and scientists from a range of disciplines. Developments in computer technology allowed for numerical solutions of nonlinear control problems, while industrial recognition and applications of nonlinear mathematical models in solving technological problems is increasing. The aim of the book Advances in Flight Control Systems is to bring together reputable researchers from different countries in order to provide a comprehensive coverage of advanced and modern topics in flight control not yet reflected by other books. This product comprises 14 contributions submitted by 38 authors from 11 different countries and areas. It covers most of the currents main streams of flight control researches, ranging from adaptive flight control mechanism, fault tolerant flight control, acceleration based flight control, helicopter flight control, comparison of flight control systems and fundamentals. According to these themes the contributions are grouped in six categories, corresponding to six parts of the book.

Aircraft Engineering Principles Lloyd Dingle, Michael H. Tooley

Aircraft Engineering Principles is the essential text for anyone studying for licensed A&P or Aircraft Maintenance Engineer status. The book is written to meet the requirements of JAR-66/ECAR-66, the Joint Aviation Requirement (to be replaced by European Civil Aviation Regulation) for all aircraft engineers within Europe, which is also being continuously harmonised with Federal Aviation Administation requirements in the USA.

The book covers modules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 of JAR-66/ECAR-66 in full and to a depth appropriate for Aircraft Maintenance Certifying Technicians, and will also be a valuabe reference for those taking ab initio programmes in JAR-147/ECAR-147 and FAR-147. In addition, the necessary mathematics, aerodynamics and electrical principles have been included to meet the requirements of introductory Aerospace Engineering courses. Numerous written and multiple choice questions are provided at the end of each chapter, to aid learning. Solutions are available for adopting instructors.

* Delivers the essential principles and knowledge base required by Airframe and Propulsion (A&P) Mechanics for JAR-66/ECAR-66 and the associated Federal Aviation Administration qualification
* Comprehensive and accessible, with self-test questions, exercises and multiple choice questions to enhance learning for both independent and tutor-assisted study, plus separate solutions
* Instructor's Manual with worked solutions from the accompanying website

Elements of Propulsion Gas Turbines and Rockets Jack D. Mattingly

This text provides a complete introduction to gas turbine and rocket propulsion for aerospace and mechanical engineers. Building on the very successful Elements of Gas Turbine Propulsion, textbook coverage has been expanded to include rocket propulsion and the material on gas dynamics has been dramatically improved. The text is divided into four parts: basic concepts and gas dynamics: analysis of rocket propulsion systems; parametric (design point) and performance (off-design) analysis of air breathing propulsion systems; and analysis and design of major gas turbine engine components (fans, compressors, turbines, inlets, nozzles, main burners, and afterburners). Design concepts are introduced early (aircraft and rocket performance in an introductory chapter) and integrated throughout. Written with extensive student input on the design of the book, the book builds upon definitions and gradually develops the thermodynamics, gas dynamics, rocket engine analysis, and gas turbine engine principles. The book contains over 100 worked examples and numerous homework problems so concepts are applied after they are introduced. Over 600 illustrations and pictures show basic concepts, trends, and design examples. Eight computer programs accompany the text, which allow for rapid calculation of trends, "what if" questions, conceptual design, homework problems, and homework verification. The software runs in the Windows operating system on PC-compatible systems.

Flight Physics

This textbook gives an introduction, with extensive historical notes, to the principal disciplines of aeronautics. The principles of applied aerodynamics, aircraft propulsion, flight performances, stability and control of conventional subsonic aircraft are augmented by overviews of helicopter technology and high speed flight.Overviews of the history of aviation and basic aeronautical terms are followed by descriptions of the major disciplines involved in aircraft flight mechanics. These are discussed in five chapters dealing with low speed aerodynamic properties (lift and drag) of wings, aircraft engines and propulsion, performances, and stability and control of aircraft. The last two chapters deal with helicopter aerodynamics and flight mechanics, and complications of high speed (transonic and supersonic) flight. In order to keep the introductory character there is an equal amount of basic formulas and explanatory text. Although problems and their solutions are not presented, there are plenty of opportunities for lecturers to extract material for practicing and examination.

Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow 2nd Edition

A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.

Improving the Efficiency of Engines for Large Nonfighter Aircraft

Because of the important national defense contribution of large, non-fighter aircraft, rapidly increasing fuel costs and increasing dependence on imported oil have triggered significant interest in increased aircraft engine efficiency by the U.S. Air Force. To help address this need, the Air Force asked the National Research Council (NRC) to examine and assess technical options for improving engine efficiency of all large non-fighter aircraft under Air Force command.
